Between the infinity of the desert and the solitary layout of the roads in the south of Angola, the Cantoneiros Houses rise discreetly and almost forgotten — small constructions that hold deep stories within the vastness of the Namibe province, once known as Moçâmedes.
They generally follow the architectural style of Public Works from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, with robust structures adapted to the arid climate, sometimes influenced by Portuguese architecture. These buildings are important historical landmarks in the region, often used today as geographical reference points for travelers and tourism expeditions.
Scattered along ancient paths, often surrounded by sand and silence, these houses are true sentinels of time, witnesses of an era when every road was maintained by hand, with dedication and resilience.

At a time when traveling through Namibe required courage and patience, the cantoneiros played an essential role. They lived in these simple, isolated houses, far from urban centers, dedicating their days to maintaining the roads that connected the coast to the interior.
Today, while traveling along routes that lead to the Namibe Desert or the unique landscapes of the south, it is still possible to spot some of these structures — some still standing, others already partially swallowed by time and sand.
More than simple ruins, these constructions are part of the historical identity of the region. They represent an almost forgotten way of life and an important chapter in the development of road connections in Angola.
Many of these structures are currently in a state of degradation or abandonment, although they are part of efforts to enhance the Built Historical Heritage of Moçâmedes.
