The month of March once again brings to the city of Moçâmedes one of the most anticipated events on its cultural calendar, with everything ready to welcome visitors, exhibitors and participants for another edition of the Festas do Mar.

Today, March 7, begins in Moçâmedes, the capital of Namibe province, one of the most anticipated events on its cultural calendar: the traditional City Festivities, which every year bring life to the month of March with music, exhibitions, gastronomy and various cultural activities.
At this moment, the city's hotel units are already receiving visitors, while exhibitors and participants finish setting up their spaces, where they will present products, handicrafts, gastronomy and various initiatives linked to local culture and economy.

A city with more than 180 years of history

Moçâmedes is one of the most emblematic cities in southern Angola. Located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Namibe Desert, the city was officially founded in 1840, in a bay that was initially known as Angra do Negro. The name Moçâmedes appears in honor of the Baron of Moçâmedes, former Governor-General of Angola, linked to the occupation and development of the region.
Over the years, the city grew as an important fishing and commercial port, becoming one of the main maritime centers of the country and assuming a relevant role in the economic dynamics of the southern coast.
Between 1985 and 2016 the city was renamed Namibe, later returning to its historic designation of Moçâmedes, a return that reinforced its historical and cultural identity.
