Camels easily adapted to Namibe's desert climate and their numbers have been increasing, with 127 animals currently registered, which will help to promote ecotourism in the region, in addition to agricultural promotion and development, as well as meat and milk production.
According to Francisco Felgueira, responsible for the Fundão zootechnical station, in Caraculo, a location 60 kilometers from the capital of the province, Moçâmedes, the project will also contribute to boosting the tourist industry and diversifying the economy in Namibe and the country, in general.
In the site were built water holes, with submersible pump capture system and tanks with severity system with capacity for over 20 thousand liters of water. Forage for animal feeding, with the support of the Institute of Agricultural Research.
Employment
The project generated more than 20 jobs for young people, especially from the community, whose adaptation to work is increasingly better, according to José Mbuale, one of the beneficiaries.
Benefits
The camel has a nutrient -rich meat and milk for human consumption.
The implementation of the project of breeding this type of animal in Namibe will benefit from the development of the economy, with
bet on tourism and diversification of agricultural production.
Arrival of animals
The first lot of 101 camels, including four males, reached this province on June 13, 2024, constituting one more
“Tourist product” for the region.
Advantages
The introduction of camels in the desert can offer several advantages, given their natural adaptation to arid environments and their use
for the efficient transport of people and goods on desert land such as the Caraculo Zone and Iona Park.
They have the ability to travel long distances without water or food and adapt easily to heat.
In the dry period, a characteristic phenomenon of the province, especially in the municipalities of Vire, Camucuio and Bibala, these animals
are able to survive and supply the milk in a normal way.
