Mocâmedes - More than six thousand tourists, including nationals and foreigners, visited the Mocamedes National Park Iona since the entry into operation of new infrastructure to support tourism in May 2024, informed this Tuesday, the park administrator, Sango dos Anjos Carlos de Sá.

In statements to ANGOP, the person responsible made it known that, this year, operational conditions for management were created, highlighting the need to invest more in infrastructure to support tourist activity.

Without quantifying the revenue collected, the administrator highlighted that fees are already being charged in accordance with the Decree on access fees to environmental conservation areas.

The administrator explained that the Park has a tourist development service in operation at the reception and providing guidance on terrain conditions.

The person responsible reported the registration of two cases of poaching, with members of the community as perpetrators.

"The park has 170 employees, of which 72 are assigned to the inspection service (including ex-military and life monitors). wild animals recruited from local communities) properly trained", he said.

Regarding the species repopulation program in the park, the source highlighted that it is going well, as, in addition to the repopulation of the population of giraffes in the region, where they had not existed for several decades, a feasibility study was carried out to reintroduce the black rhino, lion and elephant, historic species of the Park.

He stated that they are committed to reintroducing the plains zebra, one of the subspecies of the genus eqqus zebra that cohabited with the other mountain zebra subspecies that still exists in the park.

He highlighted the need to reinforce the population of black-faced Impala, a subspecies that in Angola only exists in the Park National Park of Iona and which is very vulnerable, as its habitat is under great anthropogenic pressure, due to communities.

On the conservation of biodiversity, the faunal list is made up of Orix, gazelles, olongo, cheetahs, Angolan giraffe, zebra mountain, jackal, monkey, dog, black-faced Impala, seals, brown hyena, among others. VR/SEC
